    First Hands-On Thecus N12000 Test by Speicherguide.de 

    08/24/2011- Speicherguide is a German website dedicated to storage that has reviewed hundreds of products since being established in 2003. Thecus is no exception and Speicherguide has regularly tested Thecus NAS. Things changed a bit this time, since it’s about one of the first Thecus enterprise-class NAS: the 10GbE-ready N12000.

    The N12000 is one of the few NAS able to handle fast SAS drives, ideally sized for enterprise and the powerful hardware embedded within the N12000. There were no more bottlenecks for Speicherguide to encounter: “Since the N12000 supports link aggregation, we added the two Gigabit connections over a dynamic link together. Through this connection arose over CIFS/NTFS values ​​of only 118 MB/s read and 64MB/s writing. One can therefore assume that the SATA drives represent the bottleneck here. With SAS drives should these values ​​can be improved significantly.”

    One should not forget the NAS is not only great at file sharing but also for data backup: “Thecus delivers with the array five licenses of Acronis backup and recovery for Windows servers. The application can be easily and quickly install as usual. In addition to the “simple” backup, you can now create boot drive for full restoration.”

    In a nutshell: “With a street price of less than 4,000€ and a five-year warranty, it represents a serious alternative in the SMB market.”

    IT PRO Gets Great Results from the Thecus N16000 

    “…the Thecus N16000 is a fine choice.”

    Since day one, Thecus has always been the NAS producer that pushes the envelope and expands into new territory. With products that exude power, a high quality standard, and innovative design, Thecus has recently moved into the enterprise market with their new N16000 and N12000 NAS. Dave Mitchell, the owner of one of the most advanced electronics testing facilities in the world, had the chance to take Thecus’s flagship NAS and push it to it’s limit.

    Thecus’s vision and the N16000’s SAS support are unique: “Unlike most small business NAS appliance vendors, Thecus has always had its eye on the bigger picture and is still the only manufacturer in this market sector to support SAS hard disks. We first saw this in our exclusive review of the N8800 SAS but the new N16000 shows Thecus is upping its game ever further.”

    The N16000 has big speed even over 1Gb Ethernet: “We began performance testing over Gigabit Ethernet using a Broadberry dual X5560 rack server running Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit. The Iometer utility reported a fast raw read speed 110MB/s for a mapped Windows share whilst drag and drop copies of a 2.52GB video clip returned read and write speeds of 108MB/s. Using the FileZilla client to FTP the video clip also returned the same speeds.”

    When Dave Mitchell let the sails out with 10Gb Ethernet, the N16000 really screamed: “For 10-Gigabit Ethernet testing we moved over to a dual Opteron 4170 HE Dell PowerEdge R515 fitted with a single port Intel 10GBase-SR card. With a direct fibre connection to the appliance we saw Iometer return a storming raw read speed of 680MB/s for a mapped share…Most businesses will more than likely connect the appliance to a switch over 10-Gigabit and use it to link multiple servers over Gigabit and we can confirm that the N16000 is quite capable of handling these demands.”

    The included Acronis’ Backup and Recovery 10 provides excellent backup options: “Thecus also provides some decent backup software with the N16000 as you get five copies of Acronis’ Backup and Recovery 10 for Windows Servers included in the price. We found this easy to use as you create a vault on the appliance and then schedule regular backups of disks or volumes on the server.”

    IT PRO’s verdict is in; the N16000 is an excellent choice for enterprise NAS/SAN needs: “For a 16-bay NAS/IP SAN appliance that supports both SATA and 6Git/s SAS drives, the N16000 is very good value…The new N16000 moves Thecus into the big league for network storage as it provides high storage capacity and plenty of useful features at a reasonable price…If you need the best possible performance and you’re willing to invest in the 10-Gigabit Ethernet equipment to get it, the Thecus N16000 is a fine choice.”

The N16000 did exceptionally well in the Copy, Backup and Restore sections returning one of the fastest scores we have seen thus far. If performance and value for money is the combination you are looking for then the Thecus N16000 will aptly meet your needs.”

    The N16000 has serious enterprise features not found in its class: “Another feature is the Virtual user support with VMware, Hyper V and Citrix ready and compatibility across all platforms for users of Windows, Mac, Linux, UNIX. The unit is well suited for medium to large size businesses as well…The salient features that impressed us were the remote replication, the ease of expanding the capacity of the drives, RAID set on the fly and the encryption to the RAID volume…The one feature that stood out for us was High Availability (HA) which can actively keep data on two separate but identical NAS devices. This way there is one system that is always up no matter what happens, aside from disaster hitting both places! Highly unlikely.”

    To wrap it up nicely – Game Over: “The Thecus N16000 shows how it really should be done, it has it all, bleeding edge performance, high specification, excellent warranty, and a massive capacity booster, it seems this model and the N12000 will allow Thecus to dominate this sector for a while, most certainly sounds like its saying, move over competitors, Thecus has arrived.”

    Thecus stays in the Cloud at CeBIT 2011 

    The largest electronics expo in the world, CeBIT 2011 hosted more than 4,200 companies from over 70 countries. What’s more, German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel herself along with IBM CEO Sam Palmisano opened the star-studded affair before an audience of over 2,500 top electronics professionals; a veritable who’s who of computing! Thecus was right in the middle of it all with a vibrant booth stocked with new demo products, a wealth of news regarding new and upcoming Thecus developments, and tech experts to walk people through the latest in NAS technology.

    Origin Storage Receives the Outstanding Achievement Award From Thecus! 

    Thecus presents Origin Storage with their prestigious outstanding achievement award for 2007 at Computex

    Origin Storage has been supplying the Thecus range to the UK market since 2005. During this time the relationship has gone from strength to strength with Origin increasing sales by 300% from 2006 to 2007. Owing to this the company are in Thecus’ top 20 for distributors, and are continuing to grow at a rapid pace.
